New StoryMap shows how stream temperatures may change with warming in the Southern Appalachians
This past summer a StoryMap visualizing results of a stream temperature model was published on the UGA River Basin Center website. Emily Chalfin, a former RBC technician and current Odum graduate student in the Wenger lab, along with doctoral student Phillip Bumpers and Dr. Seth Wenger developed a model to predict temperatures across the Little Tennessee…

Former undergraduate’s paper published
Former undergraduate Rachel Usher recently had a paper published in Freshwater Science. Rachel’s study looked at how decomposition rate of labile and recalcitrant low nutrient carbon sources responded to nutrients across a landscape gradient. Check out her paper here!

The Rosemond lab hosted 2 REU students this summer
This past summer the Rosemond lab hosted two NSF-funded REU students. One of the students was supported through the Coweeta Long-term Ecological Research program. Anna came from Tennessee to work with us. She studied how temperature influences the uptake of nutrients in headwater streams by conducting a series of lab experiments. Q visited from Chatam…

Summer and early Fall 2019 updates
Streamside channels and warming started! This past spring we conducted our first warming experiment in our stream side channels at Coweeta. We set up an array of channels that were then warmed to +0C, +1C , +2C, +3C, or +4C above ambient temperature. Colleagues set up litter decomposition studies and midge growth while the Rosemond…

We are hiring 2 REUs for Summer 2019-Deadline extended to March 6!
The Rosemond and Wenger labs in the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia are recruiting two undergraduates to assist in investigating how changing stream thermal regimes affect stream organisms and functions supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Participants will spend 10 weeks conducting research projects…

Caitlin Conn attended metabolism workshop in Switzerland
PhD Student Caitlin Conn attended the metabolism workshop, Respiration Regimes in River Networks: A cross-biome perspective in Ovronnaz, Switzerland this past September. This meeting brought together junior and senior scientist from across the world to discuss and advance our technical understanding of dynamics of respiration in streams and rivers.

PhD opportunity in Benstead Lab
PhD opportunity to study the effects of stream warming on carbon resources The Rosemond lab and Dr. Jon Benstead lab at the University of Alabama are each recruiting a PhD student to study stream responses to warming. See the ad posted on the Society for Freshwater Science here.

Updates for Fall 2017
We have had a busy and productive year in the lab! 1) The lab received funding this spring to study the effects of increased temperatures on organic matter processing in detritus-based streams. We will be using data from temperature manipulation experiments at multiple scales as well as natural temperature gradients to test whether ecosystem-level responses…

New findings from our research coming out in Science
So much has gone on in our lab the last couple of months! Our most exciting news is that our research findings will be published in Science next month! Our experiments have shown that nutrient enrichment accelerates loss of forest-derived carbon in streams. This is a fundamentally different pathway for nutrients to affect the health…
